Supporting First Nations and Métis Post-Secondary Students’ Academic Persistence: Insights from a Canadian First Nations-affiliated Institution

Post-secondary institutions have a critical role to play in addressing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Calls Action through indigenization strategies (TRC, 2015) but, date, it has proven challenging. In this study, research lens was expanded focus on First Nations-affiliated post-secondary institutions, since these come closest providing authentic approaches indigenization. The purpose of qualitative case study explore how social support affects academic persistence Nations Métis students at institution. findings revealed that administrative pedagogical practices, consistent with Indigenous ontologies, enabled respond challenges stemming from generational effects colonization, promoted individual familial advancement, cultural growth identity formation, community development, sovereignty.
